Women Are Not Small Men: Training Smarter for Female Physiology

Most mainstream fitness advice is based on male physiology. But women’s bodies work differently hormones, recovery, and even aging timelines all play a role. Ignoring this can hold back progress.

As Dr. Stacy Sims says:
“Women are not small men. Stop eating and training like one.”

The Female Advantage

Women often have some natural strengths that don’t get enough credit:

  • Better fat oxidation → more efficient at using fat as fuel
  • Higher pain tolerance → resilience under training stress
  • Greater resistance to fatigue → able to sustain effort for longer

But to unlock the full benefits, training has to evolve with hormonal shifts across life stages.

Perimenopause & Menopause: Shifting the Game

From your 40s onward, estrogen and progesterone decline, leading to changes in:

  • Muscle maintenance → harder to preserve lean mass
  • Bone density → increased risk of osteoporosis
  • Sleep & recovery → quality often takes a hit
  • Body composition → shifts toward fat gain if left unchecked

The solution isn’t to train less — it’s to train smarter.

What Women Need More Of

To counter these changes and stay strong, here’s what the science shows:

  • 🏋️ Heavy resistance training → protects lean muscle and strengthens bones
  • 🏃 True high-intensity intervals → supports cardiovascular health & insulin sensitivity
  • 🍗 Protein intake → aim for ~2.0 g per kg bodyweight daily for muscle, mood, and recovery

Additional Focus Points

A few extra levers to pull for sustainable success:

  • Track your cycle (if pre-menopausal) → adjust training intensity to match energy levels
  • Prioritise sleep & mobility → recovery matters more as hormones shift
  • Eat nutrient-dense food with fibre → supports gut health, hormones, and recovery
  • Expect recovery to take longer → consistency beats chasing perfection

Final Thoughts

Women thrive on lifting heavy, recovering smart, and embracing training that evolves with their hormones — not against them.

Your training journey is unique, but it can (and should) keep you strong, lean, and resilient through every stage of life.
